Semantic analysis and syntactic positioning of"run-on Sentences"in Chinese
This paper, based on an overview of the research on the origins and devel-opment of Chinese run-on sentences, reclassifies Chinese sentences using the criteria of single-event versus multiple-event sentences at the semantic level, suggesting that run-on sentences are a type of non-conventional multiple-event sentence.Subsequently, the se-mantic coherence and functions between the clauses of run-on sentences are described and analyzed.Drawing on the concepts of event types and subjectification, the paper then pro-vides a cognitive linguistic interpretation of the syntactic feature of"discontinuous-contin-uous"in run-on sentences, and initiates a preliminary discussion on the discourse functions and syntactic positioning of this type of sentence.
