Can Technological Innovation Break the Low-End Locked-in of International Division of Labor?
Does independent innovation of export enterprises help to break the low-end locked-in of the global division of labor?Based on the multi-source matching data from granted patents of CNIPA,CCTS,China Tax Investigation Database and the Global Value Chain(GVC)position database of Chinese export enterprises calculated in this paper, this paper accurately measures the techno-logical innovation level and the upstream index of the GVC of Chinese export enterprises.Furthermore, this paper examines the impact of technological innovation of export firms on their position in GVC from the two dimensions of innovation quantity and quality. It also explores the heterogeneous effects of trade methods, nature and GVC upgrading direction. To address the endoge-neity problem caused by reverse causality, this paper applies endogeneity treatment using the granular instrumental variable(GIVs)method.Additionally, robustness tests are conducted considering innovation quality re-measurement,downstream index, and R&D investment. The results demonstrate the following:(1)Technological innovation of Chinese export enterprises aids in break the low-end locked-in,promoting their upward and downstream movement in the GVC.(2)The quality effect of technolog-ical innovation on GVC is significantly higher than the quantity effect.(3)The impact of technological innovation on export enter-prises to break low-end locked-in is more significant in private enterprises, general trade enterprises and downstream leading ex-port enterprises. These findings remain consistent after endogeneity treatment and robustness tests. This research enriches the the-oretical understanding of technological innovation and the GVC and provides theoretical support for exploring feasible paths for the high-quality development of foreign trade.
