Can the Inward Foreign Direct Investment Promote Human Capital Enhancement:From the Perspective of Intergenerational Mobility in Education
Improvement in the equity and quality of education is not only directly related to the effective enhancement of human capital, but also an im-portant driving force for high-quality economic development. This study focuses on the issue of educational fairness from the perspective of intergen-erational mobility, using data from five rounds of the China Household Finance Survey(CHFS)from 2011 to 2019 to explore the impact of Inward Foreign Direct Investment(IFDI)on intergenerational education mobility. The study finds that the IFDI can enhance intergenerational education mobility and weaken intergenerational stickiness in the transmission of education between parents and children.Mechanism analysis indicates that the income effect and the educational companionship effect play a major role. The IFDI can significantly improve intergenerational education mobility by increasing the income level and awareness of educational companionship of the parent generation. The impact of IFDI is also related to urban-ru-ral heterogeneity of families, and the gender and size of the offspring, which is more pronounced in urban families and single-child families. At the same time, the positive impact of IFDI on intergenerational education mobility does not differ significantly due to child gender. This study further expands the research boundaries of IFDI in the field of social welfare effects and provides strong reference point for China to deepen its opening-up and promote social opportunity fairness.
