Hà Tiên is a port city established in Vietnam in the 18th century by the Macs,a family of Chinese immigrants from Canton.By reconstructing the urban construction during the historical period of Hà Tiên,analyzing the three typical spaces of power, ethnicity, and belief presented in its urban pattern, and revealing the identity formation behind the construction strategy, this paper illustrates how Chinese immigrants, represented by the M(a)cs,shaped the"Chinesization"of the urban spatial characteristics;and later how they were rewritten by local inhabitants and other ethnic communities, reconstructing the"localization"of the urban spatial characteristics. From an interdisciplinary perspective, this paper seeks to analyse the history of urban construction in Hà Tiên,examine the socio-political motivations behind the urban spatial changes, and broaden the horizon of the study of urban history along the Maritime Silk Road.
