Operational research has been tackling spatial layout problems over the last fifty years.Linear programming,especially 0-1 integer programming,played an important role in manipulating architectural space.This paper illustrates how spatial density,adjacent relationships,paths,and symmetry patterns can be represented with integer programs.Based on a rich set of applications in spatial design,linear programming has become a fruitful computational tool for architects.In the past decade,China has developed very rapidly in this interdisciplinary field,forming an important technical path for intelligent architectural design.
