This paper takes the example of urban renovation projects by the Urban Elephant Architects to discuss a method of practice in the historical districts in Guangzhou.Starting from the large-scale planning, concepts and historic study, bibliography review and on-site investigations, the designers gradually explored specific details and elements to re-understand the comprehensive value of the urban heritage and transform it into the clues of the design. This paper argues that research work in historical districts needs the knowledge of sociology, typology and behavioural studies to move from the profile into the section,so that the new design can be connected with the old spatial structure and the physical relationship. This design approach works for the Urban Elephant Architects and Guangzhou, and may be useful for other designers and cities.
