Abstract
Historical districts have become high-risk focus areas for disasters due to their special backgrounds. The current fire-protection regulations have limitations in guiding the renewal and renovation of such architectural spaces, and thus disaster-adapted renovations as such also becomes a major issue in urban development.Available scholarship on renovation design of such spaces from an architectural perspective mostly focuses on the value of their cultural heritage protection, while the safety guarantee mechanism remains peripheral due to its dependence on the professionalism of fire-fighting design. This study considers this a necessary starting point while interrogating various cases of renewal and renovation of historical districts based on their design principles. It takes the protection and renewal design of Gongming Market in Shenzhen as an example to elaborate its key issues of safety hazards and construct emergency evacuation scenarios for other similar projects. It proposes preliminary design strategies that could balance evacuation efficiency with spatial quality, and optimises the guidelines for future practice.
