As an important part of the national key cultural relics protection unit Guangzhou Shamian architectural complex,the former site of HSBC is the physical carrier of Guangzhou's modern banking development and the fusion of Chinese and Western cultures,as well as an important representative building of Guangzhou's architectural modern transformation.Based on historical materials such as documents,letters and photographs,we analyse the background of the founding of the HSBC Guangzhou Branch and its architectural elements,basically clarifying the construction of the bank,focusing on the planning layout and formal characteristics of the new building designed under the auspices of Western architects,and analysing the adaptation mechanism of the Western design experience under the conditions of local construction.With the change of history and society,the former site of HSBC has completed the metamorphosis from a financial building to a hotel building,and the excavation of the construction history lays the foundation for further screening of the layered information and reproducing the original appearance of the space,so as to put forward reasonable and effective preservation and utilisation plans.
