As global environmental issues have getting increasingly prominent, the sustainable use of forest resources attracts global attention. In order to tackle serious challenges such as illegal logging and deforestation,a range of countries introduced legislation to regulate timber trade, putting mandatory requirements on due diligence in the production and trading of timber products in order to ensure the traceability, legality and sustainability of timber products. In this context, countries should actively explore timber tracking technologies to jointly build environmental-friendly and sustainable timber supply chains. The paper summarizes the advantages and limitations of different technologies by examining the development of the timber tracking technologies available internationally, and puts forward policy recommendations for improving the timber tracking system in the future.
