The expansion of the wildland-urban interface(WUI)is accelerating worldwide as urbanization and forest ecosystem interaction areas expand and global population increases. In the United States,WUI is the type of land use with the fastest increase rate, which is extensive in area and densely populated, and the increasing wildfire activity there is threatening the lives and property of residents. The paper summarizes the characteristics, distribution, impacts, risk assessment, and management of WUI fires in the United States, and proposes recommendations for improving fire management in China's WUI based on the U.S.experience,which will provide a theoretical basis for fire management, fire risk assessment, community capacity building on fire prevention, and fire policy development/implementation on China'WUI.
