Wood Identification Based on Odor Fingerprinting Technology:Current State and Prospects
Wood identification is of great practical significance for regulating the timber trade market and promoting the rational and effective use of timber resources. In view of the difficulties that traditional wood identification methods are confronted with,it is urgent to explore new wood identification methods.Wood odor is mainly from the secondary metabolites of plants. As a very intuitive chemical information, odor is also of taxonomic importance.Odor fingerprint technology is a method to detect the volatile components of a sample and then analyze the information related to the characteristic odor substances, which can provide a fast,non-destructive and accurate wood identification. This paper reviews the basic principles of common odor fingerprint methods and their current application in wood identification research, aiming to break through the limitations of traditional methods and provide new ideas for the further research on wood identification technology.Although odor fingerprint techniques have been applied in the field of the identification of wood and tree species, the understanding of wood odor characteristics in the industry is still insufficient, and the description of wood odor mostly remains at the olfactory level. At the same time, the chemical composition of wood odor is not clear due to the complex mechanism of odor formation. Therefore,it is urgent to strengthen theoretical research on wood odor,so as to achieve the overall analysis of wood odor using odor fingerprint technology, clarify the material-chemical composition of wood odor, and further explore the potentials for applying odor characteristics to wood identification.
