Bamboo is one of the best substitutes for valuable wood. The quality and the efficiency of drying greatly affect the quality and the high value utilization of bamboo products.Different from wood, bamboo has unique anatomical structure, characterized with such as vascular bundle-thin wall gradient structure,no wood rays and anisotropy, and it is easy to crack, deform and warp during drying. This paper reviews the state and the migration rule of water in bamboo timber during drying and the effect of bamboo structure on water migration, compares and analyzes the advantages and disadvantages of the four common methods of drying bamboo timber, and summarizes the main influencing factors to three kinds of drying defects. The research shows that the shrinkage is the main cause of various bamboo timber defects occurred in the drying process, and identifying the relationship between water migration and rheology such as stress and strain above and below fiber saturation point and its mechanism is of great significance to effectively develop bamboo timber drying process and improve the drying quality.
