On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the formation of Western Marxism, reviewing the development trends of foreign Marxism in 2023 provides an opportunity to reflect on the changes in critical theory concerning capitalism over the past century. In that year, studies on early Western Marxists elaborated on Lukacs'ideas on materialization, organization and social ontology, exploring the relationship between his early and later thoughts and demonstrating the contemporary relevance of his ideas.Studies on the Frankfurt School developed critical theory in the 21st century by delving into the works of its representative figures and analyzing the limitations and potentials of critical theory, new structural transformation of the public sphere and the politics of labor.Studies on post-Marxism continued discussions on hegemony and strategy, presenting profound reflections on the politics of life and clarifying the common concepts at the core of radical thinking.Addressing the un-ecological nature of capitalism, foreign scholars criticized fossil capitalism and green capitalism, explicated the necessity of a transition to ecological socialism, with alternative solutions such as ecological realism and degrowth socialism.Discussions on the latest form of capitalism revolved around digital capitalism, which are manifested in the analysis of platform capitalism, technological feudalism, digital financial capitalism, digital Taylorism, and surveillance capitalism.Furthermore, discussions on crisis in the studies of disaster capitalism,on exploitation in analytical Marxism, and on the relationship between Marx and Engels in Marxology are also worthy of our attention. On the whole, the development of foreign Marxism in 2023 is characterized by"new interpretations"of"old themes",that is,the reinterpretation of such important issues as labor, autonomy, power, crisis and strategy in contemporary context.Reviewing its development trends in the past year,we can learn that foreign Marxism,in the past century, has made a problem-oriented,open,interdisciplinary and diversified development and has continuously expanded the critique of capitalism, but the structural separation between theoretical research and collective practice remains the biggest problem that needs to be solved in its development.
