Application of Polarization Microscope and XRD in Qualitative Analysis of Postmasburg Manganese Ore in South Africa
Mn-rich ores,conglomerate-type ores and conglomerate-bearing ferruginous ores are identified according to zonation and grade differentiation of ores in BIF-type ore-bodies in Postmasburg Manganese Field,South Africa. To determine the mineral composition of the ores and understand relationship of ore types with composition, different types of ores are selected and the components are identified.Polarization microscope identification and X-ray diffraction were applied in qualitative analysis for the ores based on polarization features and characteristic diffraction peaks of minerals. The result shows that the major minerals in Mn-rich ores are bixbite and braunite, and almost all the ore-minerals in conglomerate-type ores are hematite with minor ephesite, while minerals in conglomerate-bearing ferruginous ores are dominated by hydrosialite with major muscovite and minor hematite as ore-mineral.Thus,polarization microscope identification and XRD show good coherence and complementarity in mineral identification and can get accurate qualitative analysis by combining, especially for thick sedimentary deposit as lithology and rock facies changed in succession.
