A Textual Research on the Geological Translation in China
While the sci-tech practice is still being in the ascendant, research and history-writing about it is neglected. The present research goes back to the starting point of the Sino-western geological cultural exchange, and sort out the translation history of English geological knowledge into China over the past 100 years.Four stages of germination and start-up to development and deepening are classified. The research explores its periodical features and changes, and probes into the similarities and differences in translation types and motivations, translators'identities and modes, and publishing agencies. It's found that need of times is the driving force of geological translation. In terms of translation types, the application and theory type is predominant, whereas the teaching and popular science appears periodically, and from the rudimentary to the multidisciplinary in geological branches.Translators'identities change historically from versatile hands, experts, institutional translators to professors and researchers, and the mode from cooperation between the Chinese and foreigners to independent/cooperation by the Chinese themselves.Whereas publishing agencies change from singularity to diversity, and from Shanghai before liberation to principally Beijing thereafter. The research provides new documents to Chinese scientific translation history, and also enlightens geological translation studies both theoretically and practically.
