Progress and Prospect of the Research on Bambusa oldhamii Munro
Bambusa oldhamii Munro(green bamboo)has a high ecological, economic, and ornamental values as an excellent species for both shoot and timber production. To further strengthen and deepen the development and utilization of green bamboo resources in southern Zhejiang, this paper reviews the progress in green bamboo research on biology, genetics, reproduction and breeding, bamboo forest management, bamboo timber processing, bamboo shoot preservation, and bamboo shoot processing since 2005,and puts forward the future research focus and suggestions for the development and utilization of green bamboo. The research on green bamboo has been extensive and in-depth up to now,but green bamboo is more adapted to warm and humid environments, which is cold intolerant, and thus it has a limited area for growing.Green bamboo has the shoot emerge in summer, and the shoots are not fit for long-term storage and long-distance transportation after harvesting, resulting in limited geographical regions for sales. In most cases, the mother plants of green bamboo are used for transplanting and afforestation, which endows green bamboo with maternal inheritance characteristics and leads to long and irregular flowering cycles and low rate of seed setting. This restricts the breeding and improvement of green bamboo variety in terms of genetics.Hence, more research needs to be done for shoot preservation and processing, genetic information expansion, and excellent germplasm selection&breeding of green bamboo.
