Experimental Research on Treatment of Male Infertility by Regulating Oxidative Stress with Traditional Chinese Medicine
Oxidative stress(OS)refers to a state in which the body produces too many reactive oxygen species and free radicals when subjected to various harmful stimuli, which cannot be cleared in a timely manner, leading to an imbalance between the oxida-tive and antioxidant systems and causing dysfunction and damage to tissue or cells.OS is closely related to male infertility(MI).OS reduces sperm quality by affecting spermatogenesis, damaging sperm membranes, deoxyribonucleic acid(DNA),and mitochondria, reducing sperm motility, and accelerating cell apoptosis, leading to MI.This study find that the effective ingredients of single tradi-tional Chinese medicine(TCM)are polysaccharide compounds(astragalus polysaccharide, codonopsis polysaccharide, lycium barba-rum polysaccharide, polygonatum polysaccharide, cornus polysaccharide, angelica polysaccharide, ligustrum lucidum polysaccharide, and dendrobium polysaccharide),flavonoids(total flavonoids of dodder seed, quercetin, shikonin, cablin, and hypericin),saponins(ginsenoside, tribulus terrestris saponin, and diosgenin),phenylpropyl compounds(schisandrin, curcumin, and resveratrol),iridoid glycosides(aucubin),nitrogen glycosides(salidroside),oligosaccharides(Morinda officinalis A),phenylethanol glycosides(pheny-lethanol glycosides of Cistanche deserticola),and polypeptides(oyster peptides),which all have antioxidant effects and can improve the reproductive capacity of MI models of male animals. This provides a certain theoretical basis for the treatment of MI with tradi-tional Chinese medicine.
