Review of Clinical Research on Electroacupuncture for Insomnia
Objective:To review the clinical studies about electroacupuncture for insomnia in the last decade. Methods:The ran-domized controlled trials(RCTs)of electroacupuncture for insomnia were retrieved from China National Knowledge Infrastructure,China Biology Medicine disc,China Science Periodical Database,Chinese Citation Database,PubMed,Cochrane Library, and Em-base with the time interval from January 1,2012 to December 31,2021.The diagnostic criteria, treatment methods, acupoint selec-tion and meridian affiliation, electroacupuncture parameters, treatment duration and courses, and efficacy evaluation indicators were extracted from the included RCTs.Results:A total of 55 articles were included. The intervention methods included electroacupunc-ture alone, electroacupuncture combined with other external treatment methods, and electroacupuncture combined with oral drugs. The diagnostic criteria and efficacy evaluation indicators lacked unified standards. The treatment methods varied greatly and the ex-perimental design was not perfect. The commonly selected acupoints were at the bladder meridian of foot greater yang, governor ves-sel,gallbladder meridian of foot lesser yang, and stomach meridian of foot yang brightness, and mostly located on the head,extremi-ties,and back. Conclusion:The RCTs about electroacupuncture for insomnia generally have low quality, with the diagnostic crite-ria,treatment methods, efficacy evaluation indicators, and trial design remain to be improved. These limitations affect the repeat-ability of the research results and the reliability of conclusions.
