Effects of Water Extract from Cichorium intybus L.Root on Serum Glucose,Lipid, and Uric Acid Metabolism in Normal Rats and Liver and Kidney Safety
Objective:To observe the effects of water extract of Cichorium intybus L.on glucose, lipid, and uric acid metabolism,as well as liver and kidney safety in normal rats. Methods:SD rats were randomly divided into a blank control group(water by gavage),high-dose,medium-dose,and low-dose C.intybus L.groups(10,5,and 2.5 mg/kg),and a allopurinol group(20 mg/kg allopurinol so-lution).These treatments were conducted via gavage for 28 consecutive days.Dynamic measurements of serum glucose(GLU),total cholesterol(TC),triglycerides(TG),high-density lipoprotein cholesterol(HDL-C),low-density lipoprotein cholesterol(LDL-C),ser-um uric acid(SUA),urinary uric acid(UUA),and fecal uric acid(FUA)levels were taken.Uric acid clearance rate(CUUA)and 12-hour urinary uric acid excretion were calculated.Enzyme levels in serum related to uric acid metabolism, such as xanthine oxidase(XOD)and adenosine deaminase(ADA),were also measured.Liver and kidney function indicators, including alanine aminotrans-ferase(GPT),aspartate aminotransferase(GOT),blood urea nitrogen(BUN),and creatinine(Cr),were evaluated, and liver and kid-ney indices were calculated. Results:During the experimental period, there were no significant differences between the C.intybus L.groups and the blank control group in terms of glucose, lipid, and uric acid metabolism indicators(GLU,TC,TG,HDL-C,LDL-C,SUA,XOD,ADA,UUA,FUA levels,CUUA,and 12-hour urinary uric acid excretion).Additionally, there were no significant differ-ences in liver and kidney safety indicators(GPT,GOT,BUN,Cr,liver index, and kidney index)among the groups.Conclusion:C.inty-bus L.root water extract does not affect glucose, lipid,or uric acid metabolism in normal rats and exhibits good liver and kidney safety.
