Irritable bowel syndrome(IBS)is a functional gastrointestinal disorder characterized by chronic or recurrent abdominal pain accompanied by abnormal bowel movements or changes in bowel habits.Currently, the animal models of IBS that closely match clinical features are those with disease-syndrome combination. However, these models often involve Chinese medicine gavage com-bined with certain syndrome types, and there are limitations in modeling methods with multiple factors due to the complex etiology and pathogenesis of IBS.A more refined animal model could aid clinical research and drug screening. It is particularly important to develop animal models that align with clinical characteristics of IBS in TCM and western medicine. This study summarized and ana-lyzed existing IBS models, evaluated their alignment with clinical symptoms, and assessed their strengths and weaknesses based on clinical characteristics in TCM and western medicine.Improving animal model evaluation criteria, integrating TCM advantages based on the correlation of modeling methods, and considering factors such as environment, genetics, and lifestyle are key directions for fu-ture development of IBS animal models.
