"Liver stores the soul"is a key concept in the traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)theory of Zang manifestation.The soul,being a yang spirit,travels with the mind.Both the root of tolerance to fatigue and the"liver governing free flow of qi"reflect the physiological characteristic of the liver"using yang".In essence,"using yang"by the liver is an external manifestation of the liver storing the soul(yang spirit).Free flow of qi is the most important physiological function of the liver.The liver soul regulates and ensures the proper functioning of the liver in governing the free flow of qi.When the soul is at peace,free flow of qi is normal.However,if the soul is unsettled,free flow of qi becomes disrupted,leading to conditions such as liver qi counterflow and liver qi stagnation.
