Methods and Mechanisms of Traditional Chinese Medicine in the Treatment of Sarcopenia:A Review
Sarcopenia is a condition commonly seen in the elderly, characterized by a gradual loss of skeletal muscle mass and muscle function. With the increasing aging population in China, problems related to sarcopenia have become increasingly promi-nent,making it a focal point for clinical research. This review systematically explored the methods and efficacy of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)in treating sarcopenia, including oral administration of Chinese herbal medicine, acupuncture, tuina therapy, and TCM exercises, and summarized the advantages and disadvantages of various therapies and their mechanisms. It is believed that TCM offers a comprehensive theoretical understanding and treatment approaches for sarcopenia, providing unique advantages in its management.Oral administration of Chinese herbal medicine(whether single herbs or formulas)is the most common and convenient clinical treatment. It focuses on tonifying the kidneys and strengthening the spleen, thereby enhancing kidney yang, benefiting spleen qi,and nourishing muscles.Modern medicine mechanisms primarily improve muscle quality by regulating myostatin, combating ag-ing,and controlling inflammation levels. The main mechanism of acupuncture in treating sarcopenia involves increasing neuromuscu-lar conduction velocity, reducing muscle cell apoptosis, and upregulating muscle growth factors.Tuina and TCM exercises directly target muscles, effectively enhancing skeletal muscle quality, strength levels, and overall physical activity.
