A historical study of the eastern and western lakes in the vicinity of the capital in Ming and Qing dynasties
Baiyangdian lake,also called(western)Xidian or Xihu lake,is the largest freshwater wet-land in north China,mostly in the present Xiongan new area of Hebei province,while its sibling(eastern)Dongdian lake,came into view again when it was made the flood storage and detention zone as the Haihe river was hit in the rain storm in 2023.When Beijing was established as the capital city in Ming and Qing dynasties,Dongdian and Xidian lakes served as a vital resource of drinking water,and severe threat of flooding.Therefore,it is believed that the study of the historical process of water environment vicissitudes in this area answers the call for improvement of environment in light of lucid waters and lush mountains as invaluable assets.
