A series of styrene-co-lanthanum maleate ionomers(SMA-La)with different lanthanum ion(La3+)content were prepared and characterization. The process of preparation included 4 steps,i.e.copolymerization of styrene and maleic anhydride, hydrolysis of the copolymer, alkalization of the copolymer and ion exchange of Na+and La3+.The structure of SMA-La were characterized by FTIR and DSC and the lanthanum ion(La3+)content of SMA-La ionomer was determined by titration method of EDTA,it was found that the lanthanum ion(La3+)content of the solution did not exhchange to the SMA chains completely.Meanwhile, the effect of static thermal stability of SMA-La ionomer and its synergistic effect with calcium zinc stabilizerits on polyvinyl chloride(PVC)were investigated by Congo red test, and the corresponding mechanism of action was discussed. The results suggested that SMA-La ionomer was a novel potent stabilizer for PVC and its derivatives, and SMA-La ionomer improved the thermal stability of PVC through the comprehensive effect of coordination, substitution, elimination and absorption.
