Preparation and Gas Barrier Properties of HDPE/Modified Vermiculite Composites
High density polyethylene(HDPE)/modified vermiculite composites were prepared by melt blending method using modified vermiculite as filler material. The effects of the addition of modified vermiculite on the thermal stability, crystalline properties, mechanical properties and O2 barrier properties of the composites were investigated. The results show that HDPE/modified vermiculite composites retain good tensile properties comparing to pure HDPE,with elongation at break of 535%at 0.5%and tensile strength of 24.1 MPa at1%.The addition of modified vermiculite improves the toughness of the material, with the highest impact strength of 45.8 kJ/m2 at1%of modified vermiculite. The O2 barrier performance of the HDPE/modified vermiculite composite is significantly improved, and the O2 permeation coefficient is6.9×10-15 cm3·cm/(cm2·s·Pa),when the modified vermiculite is1%.
