Effects of the Sample Notches on the Lzod Notched Impact Strength
Eight raw materials[polycarbonate(PC),polyamide 6(PA6),polypropylene(PP),acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene(ABS),polyphenylene sulfide(PPS),polyoxymethylene(POM),polystyrene(PS),and high impact polystyrene(HIPS)]were selected as the research objects. The influences of notches on the Izod notched impact strength were studied from three aspects(the interval time between injection molding and notch processing, the remaining width at notch tip,and the speed of milling cutter). The results show that the Izod notched impact strength values of PC,PP,POM,and PS whose notches are processed within 1 h after injection molding are higher than these when the notches are processed after 24-hour or 48-hour conditioning.Due to the moisture absorption property, the Izod notched impact strength value of PA6 whose notches are processed after 48-hour conditioning is higher than these when the notches are processed within 1 h after injection molding or after 24-hour conditioning. When the speed of milling cutter is 21 m/min,and the remaining width at notch tip is 8.0 mm or 8.2 mm,the Izod notched impact strength values of PC,PA6,PP,POM,and PS are higher than these when the speed of milling cutter is 12 or 30 m/min,and the remaining width at notch tip is 7.8 mm.The Izod notched impact strength of PPS irregularly changes due to the influences of glass fiber fillers in the resin matrix. The interval time between injection molding and notch processing, the remaining width at notch tip,and the speed of milling cutter have no effect on the Izod notched impact strength of ABS and HIPS.
