Research Progress of Aging Characteristics and Multi-dimensional Characterization Technologies of Microplastics
Microplastics(MPs)are a novel type of pollutant that widely presents around the globe, posing serious threats to human health through the food chain or direct ingestion. In the environment,MPs undergo various aging processes, which further alters their environmental behaviors and fates. The shapes and structures of MPs make themselves difficult to detect accurately, and the reliable detection methods are the key to study the environmental aging behaviors of MPs.This work systematically introduced the aging methods of MPs in the natural environment and the exploration methods of MPs aging process. On this basis, this work focused on summarizing the key characteristic changes during the aging process of MPs,and further discussed the advantages and limitations of multidimensional characterization techniques(imaging technology, spectroscopic analysis, and thermal analysis technology)in assessing the aging processes of MPs.The future key research directions of MPs aging and the development directions of aging detection technologies were also looked forward, providing scientific guidance for a more comprehensive assessment of environmental MPs risks.
