Comparisons of the Test Methods for Adhesive Viscosity
Viscosity is an important property of adhesives. This article investigated the effects of different testing methods on the viscosity of Newtonian-fluid adhesives(polyurethane and epoxy adhesives),solvent-volatile adhesives(solvent-based styrene butadiene styrene block copolymer and polyurethane adhesives),and hot-melt adhesives(ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer, polyolefin, polyamide). The effects of different testing methods and different equipment using the same method on the viscosity of Newtonian-fluid epoxy adhesives were also investigated. The results show that, for the Newtonian-fluid adhesives, the result differences between the single cylinder rotating viscometer method and the rotating rheometer method are small. For solvent-volatile adhesives, the single cylinder rotary viscometer method has good parallelism. For hot-melt adhesives, the results of cone-plate viscometer and rheometer are consistent. This study could provide references for the selections of testing methods and conditions in daily viscosity tests,as well as for the developments of related quality control activities.
