Effects of Ceramic Fillers on the Properties of Flame-Retardant Epoxy Resin Composites
To enhance the flame retardancy of polymers,EP flame-retardant composites were prepared by using epoxy resin(EP)as the matrix and ceramicized flame retardants(CFR)with different mass fractions as fillers. The combustion properties and thermal stability properties of the flame-retardant composites were investigated via limiting oxygen index(LOI),vertical burning(UL94)and thermogravimetric analysis(TG).The results show that CFR could enhance the thermal stability of EP composites. When the mass fraction of CFR is 35%,the initial thermal decomposition temperature of EP composite could reach 377.1℃.the maximum thermal decomposition temperature could reach 435.8 ℃,and the residual carbon rate of the composite is significantly increased. The addition of CFR could improve the flame retardancy of the composites. When the mass fraction of CFR is 55%,the UL94 combustion grade could reach V-0 grade, and its LOI value could reach 29.5%.SEM results show that, with the increase of the CFR mass fraction, the dispersion function of ethylene bis(stearoyl)amine(EBS)on the particles is more obvious. The carbon layers produced after the composite calcination are more continuous and dense, which could effectively isolate the flame and oxygen. The ceramicized flame retardants modified by silane coupling agent(KH560)are more compatible with EP,and the EP flame-retardant composites have good flame retardancy and fire resistance.
