Engineering Characteristics of Neogene Mudstones in the Gangu-Zhuanglang Area of Gansu Province
Neogene mudstones are widely distributed in the Gangu-Zhuanglang area of Gansu Province.Their engineering characteristics have a significant impact on the stability of building foundations, slopes, and other structures.By comprehensively analyzing regional geological data and utilizing field geological surveys and sampling tests, this paper investigates the engineering characteristics of Neogene mudstones in the research area from both macro and micro perspectives. The research indicates that the clay minerals in Neogene mudstone is mainly composed of illite/montmorillonite mixed layer, illite, kaolinite, and chlorite. Its geochemical composition is mainly SiO2,Al2O3,Fe2O3,and CaO.The free expansion rate of mudstone is generally less than 3%,with an expansion force of less than 100 kPa,and its natural uniaxial compressive strength is less than 5 MPa.Both the natural compressive strength and shear strength(cohesion and internal friction angle)decrease as the natural moisture content increases. The research results are of great significance for the prevention and control of geological hazards, engineering design, construction, and safe operation in mudstone areas.
