Effects of Chinese yam polysaccharides on immune function, antioxidative capacity, and intestinal microbiota in calves
The study aimed to explore the effects of Chinese yam polysaccharides on the immune function, antioxidative capacity, and intestinal microbiota of calves.Thirty-six healthy Holstein calves with an age of(30±3)days and a weight of(55.27±1.53)kg were randomly divided into two groups, with 18 replicates per group and one calf per replicate. The control group(CG group)was fed with 5 L/(head·d)of milk, while the experimental group(EG group)was fed with 5 L/(head·d)of milk containing 10 g of Chinese yam polysaccharidess. The experimental period lasted for 10 days. The results showed that compared to the CG group, the EG group exhibited a significant increase in the serum concentrations of IgA,IgG,IgM,TNF-α,and the activity of SOD(P<0.05).The EG group showed an increase in OTUs in the intestinal microbiota, with a notable elevation in the abundance of beneficial bacteria(Firmicutes,Proteobacteria, and Actinobacteriota)by 21.67%,60.83%,and 88.25%,respectively,while harmful bacteria of the phylum Bacteroidetes decreased. The study inidicates that adding Chinese yam polysaccharides to calf milk replacer can enhance immune function, improve antioxidative capacity, and regulate intestinal microbiota by increasing beneficial bacteria and reducing harmful bacteria.
