Research progress on utilization of rice processing by-products as feed resources
Rice is one of the important food crops in China.During the process of milling them into rice grains,a series of by-products are produced, such as rice husks, broken rice, rice bran, and straw.Broken rice and rice bran have high nutritional value and can be directly added to livestock feed or used as a substitute for some energy feed after processing, offering advantages such as improving production performance and reducing costs.Rice husks and straw have low nutritional value and are not efficiently utilized, with only a portion being used in the feed for cattle, dairy cows, sheep, and geese. In recent years, there has been extensive research on the treatment of rice processing by-products using physical, microbial, and enzymatic methods, which can improve the nutritional value and palatability of rice husks and straw, thereby increasing their utilization efficiency. This article reviews the nutritional value, processing methods, and the impact on the growth performance, digestibility, and intestinal development of rice by-products(rice husks, broken rice, rice bran, straw)for poultry, pigs, ruminants, and aquatic animals, providing a reference for the utilization of rice by-products as feed resources.
