Research progress on biological functions of sunflower by-products and their application in animal production
Sunflowers,as a common oil crop, are an important source of fats and proteins and are widely used in both food and pharmacological applications. The chemical components of sunflowers include flavonoids, terpenes, chlorogenic acid, and others, which possess various bioactivities such as antioxidant,antitumor,hypoglycemic,anti-inflammatory,antibacterial,and immune-boosting properties. With the increase in sunflower production, the yield of by-products also increases, mainly including the meal, seed shells, and flower discs formed during the oil extraction process of sunflower seeds. The refined sunflower by-products have high nutritional value, which can improve animal yield, enhance the body's immunity, and increase the economic value of the livestock. The article reviews the main bioactivities and biological functions of sunflower by-products and summarizes their application in different types of animal production, providing a reference for the further development and utilization of sunflowers.
