Effects of Artemisia argyi on growth performance, serum biochemical indexes, and serum antioxidant capacity of Hu sheep weanling lambs in southern Xinjiang
The aim of this experiment was to study the effects of Artemisia argyi leaf powder on the growth performance, serum biochemical indexes, and antioxidant indexes of Hu sheep weaned lambs.A total of 96 Hu sheep lambs(equal numbers of males and females)were divided into two control groups and six experimental groups, with male groups(M0,M1,M2,M3)and female groups(F0,F1,F2,F3)receiving 0,1.0‰,1.5‰,and 2.0‰ Artemisia argyilea f powde r i n basal diet, respectively. The pre-test lasted for seven days and the formal test lasted for 30 days. The results showed that the total weight gain and average daily weight gain in all experimental groups were extremely higher than those in the control groups(P<0.01).The feed conversion ratio of male lambs in all experimental groups was significantly lower than that in the control group(P<0.05),and it was also extremely lower among female lambs compared to the control group(P<0.01).Compared to the male control group, the content of albumin(ALB)and glucose(GLU)in male lambs of all experimental groups was significantly increased(P<0.05),and the albumin/globulin(A/G)was extremely increased(P<0.01),with significant decreases in globulin(GLB)content in groups M2 and M3(P<0.05).Compared to the female control group, the ALB content in female lambs of all experimental groups was significantly increased(P<0.05),GLB content was extremely decreased(P<0.01),and the A/G ratio was extremely increased(P<0.01).Compared to the male control group, the superoxide dismutase(SOD)activity and total antioxidant capacity(T-AOC)in groups M1 and M3 were extremely increased(P<0.01),while catalase(CAT)activity and malondialdehyde(MDA)content were extremely decreased(P<0.01).Compared to the female control group, the SOD activity in female lambs of all experimental groups was extremely increased(P<0.01),and the MDA content was extremely decreased(P<0.01),the oxidized glutathione(GSSG)content and T-AOC in groups F1 and F3 were extremely increased(P<0.01),while the CAT activity was extremely decreased(P<0.01).The study indicates that the addition of Artemisia argyi leaf powder to the basal diet of Hu sheep can improve their growth performance, serum biochemical indicators, and antioxidant capacity, with the best feeding effect observed at an addition level of 1‰.
