Effects of Pueraria lobata polysaccharides on growth performance, immune function, and intestinal flora of calves
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of different levels of Pueraria lobata polysaccharides on growth performance, immune function, and intestinal flora of calves.A total of 40 healthy Holstein calves with similar body weight were randomly divided into four groups, with 10 replicates per group, and one calf per replicate.Calves in the control group were fed a basal mixed diet, and those in the experimental groups were fed diets supplemented with 250,500 and 1 000 mg/kg Pueraria lobata polysaccharide, respectively. The pre-test period was seven days and the formal test period was 60 days. The results showed that compared with the control group, the final weight and average daily weight gain of the calves in experimental groups 2 and 3 significantly increased(P<0.05),and the feed conversion ratio significantly decreased(P<0.05),the diarrhea rate of the calves in each experimental group significantly decreased(P<0.05),the level of immunoglobulin G(IgG)in each experimental group significantly increased(P<0.05),and the levels of secretory immunoglobulin A(sIgA)in experimental groups 2 and 3 significantly increased(P<0.05),the levels of transforming growth factor-β(TGF-β)in the serum of calves in each experimental group significantly increased(P<0.05),while the levels of interleukin-1β(IL-1β)and tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α)significantly decreased(P<0.05).The levels of interleukin-10(IL-10)significantly increased(P<0.05),and the levels of interleukin-2(IL-2)significantly decreased in experimental groups 2 and 3(P<0.05).Compared with the control group, the abundance of Proteobacteria in the intestines of calves in experimental groups 2 and 3 significantly decreased(P<0.05),the relative abundance of Bacteroidetes and Faecalibacterium significantly increased(P<0.05),and the relative abundance of Bifidobacterium and Ruminococcus in the intestines of calves in each experimental group significantly increased(P<0.05).The study indicates that feeding Pueraria lobata polysaccharide to Holstein calves can improve growth performance, enhance immune function and regulate intestinal flora abundance, and reduce diarrhea rate, with the addition of 500 mg/kg Pueraria lobata polysaccharides showing the best effects.
