Effects of dietary compound Chinese herbal medicine on reproductive performance, lactation performance of Danish sows and growth performance of suckling piglets
The experiment aimed to investigate the effects of adding a compound Chinese herbal medicine to feed on the reproductive performance, lactation performance of Danish sows, and growth performance of suckling piglets.A total of 60 healthy Danish sows,30 days before parturition and in their third pregnancy, were randomly divided into two groups with three replicates per group and 10 sows per replicate.Sows in the control group were fed a basal diet, and those in the compound Chinese herbal medicine group were fed a diet supplemented with 2.5%compound Chinese herbal medicine. The pre-trial period lasted for seven days and the formal experiment lasted for 51 days. The results showed that compared to the control group, the amniotic fluid volume, milk yield, and milk protein rate of sows in compound Chinese herbal medicine group were extremely increased(P<0.01),the number of healthy piglets, birth litter weight, and lactose rate were significantly increased(P<0.05),and the average duration of parturition and urea nitrogen content were extremely decreased(P<0.01).The number of weak piglets, stillbirths, and mummified fetuses were significantly decreased(P<0.05).Compared to the control group, the total superoxide dismutase(T-SOD)activity and total antioxidant capacity(T-AOC)in the compound Chinese herbal medicine group were extremely increased(P<0.01),while malondialdehyde(MDA)content was extremely decreased(P<0.01),and glutathione peroxidase(GSH-Px)activity was significantly increased(P<0.05).Levels of immunoglobulin G(IgG)and interleukin-4(IL-4)were extremely increased(P<0.01),and immunoglobulin M(IgM)level was significantly increased(P<0.05),while levels of interleukin-1β(IL-1β)and interleukin-6(IL-6)were significantly decreased(P<0.05).Compared to the control group, the number of weaned piglets, weaning litter weight, and individual weaning weight in the treatment group were significantly increased(P<0.05),and the diarrhea rate was extremely decreased(P<0.01).The IgG level was extremely increased(P<0.01),IL-1β level was extremely decreased(P<0.01),and IgM and IL-4 levels were significantly increased(P<0.05).The results show that 2.5%compound Chinese herbal medicine containing Eucommia ulmoides,Morinda officinalis,Epimedium brevicornu,Astragalus membranaceus,Ligusticum chuanxiong,Glycyrrhiza uralensis,Vaccaria segetalis, and Leonurus cardiaca in the basal diet can improve the reproductive performance and milk yield of sows, improve the primary milk quality, improve the immunity of sows and the growth performance of piglets, and reduce the diarrhea rate of piglets.
