Effects of β-glucan on growth performance, antioxidant, and intestinal microorganisms of piglets
The experiment aimed to investigate the effects of adding β-glucan to piglets diets on the growth performance, serum antioxidant capacity, and intestinal microorganisms of piglets, and to determine the optimal level of β-glucan supplementation in piglets production.A total of 144 weaned piglets with similar body weights at 21 days of age were randomly divided into four groups, with three replicates per group and 12 piglets per replicate. The control group was fed a basal diet, while experimental groups A,B,and C were supplemented with 50,100,and 200 mg/kg of β-glucan in the basal diet, respectively. The preliminary trial lasted for one week, and the formal trial period was four weeks. The results showed that compared to the control group, the final weight, average daily weight gain, and average daily feed intake of piglets in experimental group B were significantly increased(P<0.05),and the feed conversion ratio was significantly reduced(P<0.05).The average daily feed intake of piglets in experimental group C was significantly increased(P<0.05).The diarrhea rate of piglets in groups A,B,and C was extremely reduced(P<0.01).Compared to the control group, the activity of catalase in the serum of piglets in experimental groups B and C was extremely enhanced(P<0.01).The activity of superoxide dismutase in the serum of group B was significantly increased(P<0.05),and the level of malondialdehyde was significantly reduced(P<0.05).Compared to the control group, the Simpson index and Chao1 index of intestinal microorganisms in piglets of experimental groups B and C were significantly increased(P<0.05).The relative abundance of Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes in the gut of piglets in group B were extremely increased(P<0.01),while the relative abundance of Clostridium and Streptococcus were significantly reduced(P<0.05).The relative abundance of Lactobacillus in the gut of piglets in groups A and B were extremely significantly increased(P<0.01).The study indicates that the addition of β-glucan in the diet can improve the growth performance of piglets, enhance the antioxidant function of the body, and improve intestinal health, with an appropriate addition level of β-glucan at 100 mg/kg.
