Research progress of the biosynthesis of mycosporine-like amino acids
The synthetic chemical ultraviolet filters may cause the environmental pollution, while the small natural water-soluble ultraviolet light-absorbing compounds mycosporine-like amino acids(MAAs)are expected to become ecologically friendly sunscreens with broad application prospects. The MAAs content are low in the producing organisms, obstructing MAAs exploitation as safe alternatives to currently used commercial products.Expression of MAAs biosynthetic gene clusters in host cells via synthetic biology is an effective strategy to solve the shortage of MAAs supply. This paper introduces the biosynthetic pathway of MAAs,summarizes the progress of MAAs biosynthesis, and discusses the strategies to improve MAAs biosynthesis efficiency.
