Studies on Tingzhou Academy During the Song and Yuan Dynasties
During the Song and Yuan Dynasties, there were a total of 21 academies in Tingzhou Prefecture, two of which only had the function of sacrifice. In fact, there were only 17 academies with academic and educational functions,as well as 2 reading places(halls),and the academy education was earlier than that of the state-run schools at provincial level. The Yang-zhi Pavilion of Guanzhai Mountain in Liancheng County was the earliest academy within Tingzhou territory. From the perspec-tive of time distribution, most academies were founded in the Southern Song Dynasty, which was closely related to the massive increase in the population of Tingzhou in the Southern Song Dynasty. From the perspective of geographical distribution, most of the academies were concentrated the central region of Tingzhou.Changting, where the state office was located, was an im-portant town for academy education established by officials and government officials in Tingzhou during the Song Dynasty, and Guanzhai Mountain was the precursor of the academy education for disseminating Neo-Confucianism in Tingzhou. The rise of private or family academies was the beginning of the prosperity of rural academies in Tingzhou in the future. The outset of Tingzhou's academy education in the Song and Yuan Dynasties was based on the beautiful and quiet environment of Guan-zhai Mountain, great importance attached by local officials, and the geographical advantage that was adjacent to the birthplace of Neo-Confucianism(Min School).
