Academy is a unique cultural and educational organization in ancient China and a common cultural symbol in Fujian and Taiwan.Academy architecture is the materialized space of Chinese literati spirit,and academy name is the core of academy architecture spatial expression.The names of the ancient traditional academies in Fujian and Taiwan are colorful and contain rich connotations.The main naming forms are:the name of the land,the name of the surrounding landscape,the name of the people,the name of the classics and allusions,the name of the intention to establish the academy,the name of the object,the name of the family name,the name of the temple and the name of the legend.These names have become a kind of invisible education in the form of symbolization and a kind of imperceptible"silent lecture"affecting the spiritual world of academy students,thus constituting a part of the ideological and cultural communication content of the academy.Studying and discussing the naming of the ancient academies in Fujian and Taiwan can not only provide a deeper understanding and cogni-tion of the history,spirit and culture of academies,but also have enlightening significance for contemporary architecture,espe-cially the naming of the architectural space of contemporary colleges and universities and the construction of the material and cultural connotation of colleges and universities.
