Research progress on the EPF/EPFL gene family in regulating plant growth, development, and responses to abiotic stress
The EPF/EPFL(EPIDERMAL PATTERNING FACTOR/EPF-LIKE)family genes, exclusive to plants, are a group of small secreted peptides rich in cysteine.Typically functioning as ligands, the EPF/EPFL family binds to specific receptors, activating downstream signaling pathways and thereby participating in important physiological processes, such as plant growth and development as well as responses to abiotic stress. This review summarizes the evolution and structural characteristics of EPF/EPFL family members, with a focus on the regulatory roles in plant growth and development as well as responses to abiotic stress, discusses the significance and outlines unresolved issues, aiming to provide a reference for further research on the functions of EPF/EPFL family genes.
