Methods for Quality Assurance of Spot size in Pencil Beam scanning Proton Therapy
Objective:This study aimed to compare different methods for measuring spot size for quality assurance in pencil beam scanning proton therapy system. Methods:Three different types of detectors, including Matrixx One two-dimensional plane ionization chamber array,Lynx-PT planar scintillator detector, and XRV-124 conical scintillator detector, were employed to measure spot sizes with different energies in the proton therapy system. The measured results were compared with the spot sizes obtained during commissioning and acceptance testing(CAT).Results:The spot size measurement results using Matrixx One showed significant deviations compared to CAT,with a maximum deviation of 230 MeV spot size at 41.25%.The maximum deviations for Lynx-PT and XRV-124 spot size measurements compared to CAT were-7.35%and 3.69%,respectively.Lynx-PT measurements consistently resulted in smaller spot sizes compared to CAT.Conclusion:Both Lynx-PT and XRV-124 are effective in measur-ing spot size in proton therapy systems, with Matrixx One optimized for larger spot sizes. In contrast,XRV-124,compared to Lynx-PT and Matrixx One,has an advantage in spot size measurement for rotational treatment rooms.
