The Role of Background Music in Online Instructional Videos:An Empirical Analysis Based on a Control Experiment
Teaching videos have become the main component of online learning. However, there is no consistent conclusion in the academic community about the effect of background music in teaching videos.Using background music preference as a moderating variable and a 2(declarative vs.procedural)×2(with music vs.without music)experimental design, the study attempts to explore the effects of background music on learners'learning mood, learning performance, and cognitive load under different knowledge types. The results found that:background music can effectively stimulate learners'positive academic mood and significantly enhance the transfer scores of learners with high music preference, but there is no significant effect on the retention and transfer scores of learners with low and no music preference;and there is no significant effect of background music on learners'cognitive load.Accordingly, optimization suggestions are made at the levels of online teaching video design and online learning platform, with a view to improving the online learning experience and learning outcomes.
