From Emotional Empathy to Cognitive Empathy—Reflection on Human-Computer Empathy Research in Intelligent Teaching Systems
In order to promote students to maintain positive learning emotions and long-lasting learning motivation during the learning process, the design of intelligent teaching systems should attach great importance to the emotional interaction between humans and machines,i.e.human-computer empathy. This paper defines human-computer empathy in an intelligent teaching system as the ability to recognize the learner's emotions and give feedback,so that the learner perceives that his or her emotions are understood by the intelligent teaching system and maintains a strong motivation to learn. This definition is similar to the definition of human empathy, highlighting both emotional and cognitive empathy.A review of related literature shows that most of the current research on the emotional aspects of intelligent teaching systems focuses on emotion recognition, and the research on empathy strategies is only at a shallow level. Therefore, this paper designs a set of human-computer empathy strategy frameworks that consider different emotional states of students, and offers suggestions for future research directions for human-computer empathy in intelligent teaching systems.
