The Impact of VR Technology on College Students'Spatial Abilities—A Meta-Analysis Based on 23 Experimental or Quasi-Experimental Studies
Scholars at home and abroad have conducted many experimental or quasi-experimental studies on the influence of VR technology on college students'spatial abilities, but the results are still controversial.Based on this,a meta-analytic approach is used to explore the effects of VR technology on college students'spatial ability and to examine the moderating variables that may influence its effects.A meta-analysis of 23 studies reveals that:(1)the effect value,g=0.556,indicates a moderate impact of VR technology on college students'spatial abilities, with the most obvious effect on spatial orientation abilities;(2)from the type of technology,AR has a greater impact on college students'spatial abilities;(3)from the virtual form, desktop VR is more obvious on college students'spatial abilities;(4)from the perspective of intervention duration,short-term intervention is more effective;(5)from the perspective of discipline,it has a greater impact on college students'spatial abilities when applied to engineering and technology disciplines;(6)from the perspective of learning place,game-based learning is more resultful;(7)from the perspective of person, the third-person viewpoint can bring out the best effect in enhancing college students'spatial abilities.
