A Study on the System of Seasonal Sacrifices in Zhouli
Sacrifice was a political event in the pre-Qin Dynasty period. The seasonal sacrifices were held every season as regular sacrifice, but there were problems of confusion of sacrificial names in the extant literature, such as multiple uses of one name and multiple names of one sacrifice. There was even a case of holding two winter sacrifices in one year, which became controversial in the ancient times. The interpretation of sacrificial names reflects the production and life of ancient Chinese people, and shows their unique understanding of nature and human relations. From the emperor to the common people in the Zhou Dynasty, they followed the seasonal sacrifices. The time, items, and ritual vessels used for the seasonal sacrifices had strict hierarchical standards, reflecting the long tradition of respecting ghosts and ancestors in the Central Plains culture, and also revealing the ideological origin of Confucianism's emphasis on ritual law and filial piety.
