On the Friendship Between Ladies and Prostitutes in the Mid-Qing Dynasty:Centering on Wang Meiqing and Qian Lianyin
In the mid-Qing Dynasty,the ladies Wang Meiqing and Qian Lianyin wrote 21 poems and lyrics for or about prostitutes,which were mainly composed between 1795 and 1821,the early period when the life of the ladies and their husbands was relatively relaxed and stable.The poems show the fact that they were friends with prostitutes in Suzhou and Yangzhou,such as Du Wanlan,Cui Shuying,Tang Xiaoyun,etc.The friendship between ladies and prostitutes has the characteristics of two-way communications,daily-life involvement,and triangular interactions among literati,ladies and prostitutes.The ladies'poems that were given to and related with the prostitutes enriched the ladies'literary works,and the facts that revealed the friendship between the ladies and the prostitutes are also useful for studying the social life of women in the Qing Dynasty.
