A Research on the City Image of Suzhou During the Republic of China:A Case Study of the English Newspaper The China Press
During the period of the Republic of China,The China Press,an influential English newspaper in China,reported and published a lot of news and articles about the Suzhou city.They showed three characteristics of the city image of Suzhou at that time:a capital of classical landscape of"traditional China",a tourist destination in contrast with Shanghai,and a cultural city where"the East meets the West".Researches on the relevant publications of The China Press show that,from the perspective of foreign media,the city image of Suzhou during the Republic of China represented rich Chinese classical beauty,even becoming a typical symbol of"traditional China"in the eyes of"the others".Besides,Suzhou widely integrated the newly sprouted things and the achievements of foreign civilization,and demonstrated the openness and inclusiveness of Suzhou.
