Xu Dunren and Tongzhi Suzhou Prefectural Gazetteers
Xu Dunren,a literati in the late Qing Dynasty,was outstanding in his writings,and he was still famous in his 40s,and wrote Risun Zhai Manuscript and Risun Zhai Diary.During the Tongzhi period of the Qing Dynasty,Xu Dunren participated in the compilation of the Tongzhi Suzhou Prefectural Gazetteers with Feng Guifen,who were responsible for the military category and the residence and garden category respectively.Xu was later admitted as Excellent Tribute Student of Jiangsu.Ye Changchi,his alumnus,recorded in his diary the communication between the two when they were compiling local chronicles in Suzhou.Xu Dunren's experience became a turning point in his career in the imperial examinations,which reflected the importance that the late Qing government attached to this work,and also reflected the inadequacy of the imperial examinations in the late Qing Dynasty.
