Rewriting Classics,Remaking Southeast Asia:On the Novelistic Creation of Ng Kim-Chew
As an outlier among the new generation of Malaysian Chinese writers,Ng Kim-Chew has always stood in opposition to traditional Malaysian Chinese literature, playfully rewriting literary classics and remaking the Southeast Asian diaspora.Ng Kim-Chew discusses the transformation of Lu Xun and Yu Dafu from"classicized"subjects to"anti-classicized"targets from the perspective of the origination of literary institutions. In specific literary practices,Ng Kim-Chew's remaking of classics is manifested in the rewriting of stories and the return of the dead.Ng Kim-Chew attempts to regain the voice of contemporary Malaysian Chinese literature through the literary practice of dissolving classics.
